Dear families,

Thank you so much for helping to make our book fair a success! The library was an especially happy and joyful place last week! The funds raised will be used to add books and materials to our media center!

Any remaining eWallets funds can be used at our online book fair which will be open through May 8th
https://www.scholastic.com/bf/besbooks.
After this date, any remaining balance will be returned to you via an eGift card which can be used throughout Scholastic online or to fund an eWallet for a future book fair.
Thanks again for your support!

I'm so very happy for the return of a Brownsville tradition - The Scholastic Book Fair!

Bruno has been quite the hit this week! Ask your child about Bruno's presence in the daily announcements! (Thank you, Mr. Foreman! You rock!)
Sneak Peek!
Since we are not able to have families in the building this year, I thought you might like a sneak peek of the library! Pictures provided below in slide show format.
Book Fair Family Letter
Click below to open a copy of the book fair letter sent home with the flyer last week. This is a great way to revisit payment options (cash, check, card and e-wallet) and other important information.

Brownsville Scholastic Book Fair Website
Here is a link to the Brownsville Scholastic Book Fair Website. This page has a link to allow for online viewing and purchasing beginning April 25th. Items ordered online will be shipped directly to your home. There are likely to be items available online that are out of stock in the library so it might be worth a look!

Classroom e-wallet
Teachers traditionally post class wishlists at the book fair on family night. Several families have asked if there is a way to contribute to classroom libraries since we are not able to host a family night this year. Scholastic provides the option for teachers to create an e-wallet for classroom library purchases! If you'd like to contribute to a classroom e-wallet, please check out the link below.

Book Fair Schedule
Most students will have the opportunity to shop during their weekly library class time. Upper grade teachers on the B week schedule signed up for time to visit as class this week. In addition, there will be open times in the library for students to visit the library each day.
I'm looking forward to hosting my first book fair and the return of a Brownsville tradition! The library has been an extra joyful place filled with enthusiasm and excitement this past week!

Please do not hesitate to reach out should you have any questions.
Love and hugs,
Gay

Hello BES families! The year is off to a fantastic start in the library. As shared on my Back to School night video, after teaching for twenty years at Crozet Elementary School, this is my first year at Brownsville and my first year as a media Specialist. My goal for the year is to create a space where every BEE knows they are welcome and that they belong! I want to help students develop a love of reading and to foster a sense of wonder and curiosity as they become critical thinkers and lifelong learners. I want our  library to be a place full of positive energy,  where it is ok to make mistakes, as we all learn and grow together! Thank you for sharing your children with me! We had a fantastic fall in the BES library!
Hello Brownsville Parents!
My name is Aidan O’Connor, and I am the Library Media Assistant at Brownsville! I am so excited to work in the library with Ms. Baker, since we have the fantastic job of helping kids find new books to read as well as old favorites to return to. Like Gay, this is my first year working in a school library, and so far it has been a blast! I am from Alexandria, Virginia originally and have worked the last three years as a Special Education TA in Fairfax County Public Schools, before moving down to Charlottesville in 2020. I decided to seek out a job in a library because I was a voracious reader as a child. I’m 24 years old, so I have read many of the same books we have on the shelves today when I was a student, and love to give recommendations! I have loved meeting and working with all the Brownsville kids and I can’t wait to see what else the library has in store!

All Are Welcome by Alexandria Penfold and You Matter by Christian Robinson
It was very important to me to begin the year with these two books. All are welcome in our beautiful BES hive and each every Brownsville Bee matters all day, every day!

Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month ran from September 15th through October 15th. Here are just a few of the books we enjoyed in the BES hive!
Below is a favorite video clip! Listen as author Matt de la Pena reads Last Stop on Market Street to a lucky group of kiddos. I want to ride and listen along with them!
Science in the Library - Pumpkin Jack
After reading Pumpkin Jack by Will Hubbard, we created one of our own for the BES library! He's received quite of bit of attention and students and staff alike have enjoying watching the decomposition process!

Digital Citizenship
Students in kindergarten, first and second grades participated in recognizing Digital Citizenship Week in October. We watched the videos linked below and talked about the ways we can be safe, respectful and responsible when using technology. No worries, grades three, four and five, your turn is coming!
Dictionary Skills
Fifth graders used Jamboard to work with guide words and learn dictionary skills. We are so lucky to have the Promethean boards to make our lessons more fun and engaging!
Picture
Biographies
Fourth grade students have been frequent visitors to the library recently as they check out books to help with their biography research projects.
Hands on Fun
Check out the slide show below to see some of our Bees in action. I'm always amazed at what they can make and create!
Thanksgiving
Some of the books shared just before the Thanksgiving break include Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story, Thunder Boy and Balloon Over Broadway!
Library Squad
We had our first few meetings of Library Squad! I'm looking forward to great year working and planning with our fifth grade leadership friends!

Thanks again for sharing your children with me. I wish you all a wonderful winter break!
Love and hugs,
Gay
